How to ask a seller better questions

A heavily weathered fossil can be highly original. A pristine-looking fossil can be extensively restored. Record condition and originality separately. Documentation before cleaning or repair

Photograph the specimen dry and unaltered. Include a metric scale, both faces, edges, break surfaces, labels and packaging. If treatment is needed, take another photo set after each major step and keep a note of materials used.

This may feel excessive for a modest fossil. Ten years later it is the difference between “probably repaired at some point” and a clear conservation history.

When to escalate to an expert

Specialist review is most useful when a small identification difference creates a large price difference, restoration is difficult to map, a specimen has important old provenance, or the taxonomic claim is more precise than the visible evidence. Clear photos plus locality information will usually get a better expert answer than a glamorous listing title.

Field examination protocol

When a specimen is important enough that the identification or restoration level will change the price, inspect it in a fixed sequence. Start with the whole object under diffuse neutral light. Then use low-angle raking light to reveal relief, tool marks and filler boundaries. Follow with a hand lens or low-power microscope on diagnostic anatomy, break surfaces and suspicious joins. Finally, compare the specimen with reliable reference images from the same fossil group and locality.

Do not let one test overrule the rest of the evidence. Ultraviolet fluorescence can reveal some adhesives, but natural minerals and consolidants may also fluoresce. A smooth patch may be filler, or it may be naturally polished by preparation. A color change can mark restoration, mineral zoning or weathering. The conclusion should come from several compatible observations.

Turning evidence into a defensible value range

Once the fossil is identified as narrowly as the evidence allows, divide marketplace evidence into three buckets. Bucket A contains close comps: same fossil type, similar size and completeness, comparable preparation and restoration, and similar locality confidence.
