Match the exact specimen, not the most dramatic asking price.

Fossil value is created by a specific object: identity, anatomy, completeness, preservation, preparation, restoration, locality, legality, provenance, rarity, and demand.

Compare exact peers

Do not compare a polished ammonite half with an unpolished complete ammonite, a restored trilobite with a natural articulated specimen, or an isolated tooth with one carrying documented formation and collection history.

Use completed sales cautiously

Scientific significance can conflict with private-market value

A unique vertebrate, type specimen, or exceptional articulated fossil may be scientifically important in ways a marketplace cannot capture. Institutional placement and expert documentation may be more appropriate than maximizing sale price.

Build a comparison set

Use listings to compare morphology, matrix, preparation, locality claims, dimensions, repairs, and seller disclosure. Similar appearance alone does not establish identity or legality.
